I hate people that misrepresent the Truth

Tom Pauken - Chairman, Texas Workforce Commission wrote an article I read in the the Austin American Statesman (or Lakeway News) this weekend. He essentially paraphrased an article from the Economist that I also read. He claims that California was a republic like Texas was before it was a state. Although it is "arguably" factual it is a load of BS.

The California Republic, also called the Bear Flag Republic, was a government proclaimed by settlers on June 14, 1846, in Sonoma in the then-Mexican province of California. Declared during the Mexican-American War, the republic lasted less than a month.

And

Beginning in the late 18th century, the area known as Alta California was colonized by the Spanish Empire. It and the rest of Mexico became an independent republic in 1821. In 1846, California broke away from Mexico, and, after the Mexican-American War, Mexico ceded California to the United States. It became the 31st state admitted to the union on September 9, 1850

Although some people claimed independence they never received it. They were vassals of Mexico until annexed.

Texas much like the US declared independence, fought for it, and won. Had a constitution and was recognized by other countries (France to name one), as a country. The "Bear Flag Republic" was nothing more than a small area that said we are independent, but never was and ever earned it.

Please don't subscribe to fiction writers; unless for fun of course. No revisionist history here or fantasy.
